You may have grown accustomed to wearing fewer layers for warmth during the past few weeks. That’s about to change, now that summer has given over to fall. A sure sign of that is when trailside tree branches now shed cold droplets of dew as you brush by on your way to the beach. The anticipation of this season has built in your psyche. In your mind’s eye pods of salmon, finning and rolling, just there, has you cranked up to a fevered pitch. You briefly think, what’s a clammy, cold early-morning fog, or an unexpected bitter afternoon squall going to hurt? You’ve been here before, both metaphorically and literally. The tightness in your chest reminds you of the brush with pneumonia you had several seasons ago, contracted right from this very beach.
